Wiltshire Ladies produced a spirited performance but just missed-out at Yeovil to Somerset losing by five shots in the first round of the Johns Trophy inter-county championship.
The match against last year’s beaten finalists was tight throughout. Wiltshire led 26-20 across the board after five ends but trailed 47-49 at ten. They had pulled back to tie affairs at 73-73 at 15 ends. However, over the final stretch Somerset just edged away to a narrow victory.
The rink skipped by Devizes’ Marguerite Alexander won by ten shots but was Wiltshire’s lone victor. However, the rinks skipped by Alex Jacobs (Box) and Warminster’s Kim Smith both recorded fighting 17-17 draws. Somerset though took the honours on the other three and by sufficient shots to erase Alexander’s winning margin.
Wiltshire’s remaining hope of a county team success at national level this season is the Walker Cup side who play Devon in the County Double Rink on 26th June.
