Across the county today saw the play offs for the ladies’ two wood singles played over three greens (Pewsey Vale for the North and Avon and Spencer Melksham for the South).
A report for the South greens are detailed below (North report to follow later).
Green A – Avon
Avon saw 12 ladies turn out with each of their aims being to make the final two who would guarantee a place in the quarter finals at Wroughton on Friday 16 June. The first round games were largely one-sided with several big results (notably Kathryn Yeoman beating Ann Selby 17-1, Jean Collier beating Sylvia Crabbe 19-5 and Cathy Burrows beating Ann Humphries 19-9 to name but a few). After a couple of games each, the semi finalists were determined, Christabel Francis due to play Margaret Cooke and Kathryn Yeoman due to play Jean Collier. Both games were relatively close but the honours went to Margaret Cooke from Broughton Gifford 16-13 and Kathryn Yeoman from Box 16-9.
Green B – Spencer Melksham
15 ladies arrived at Melksham in a bid to fight out for their place in the quarter finals. There were a number of close first round games with Sandra Bartlett pipping Dawn Toomer to the post 15-14 and Jenny McShane beating Ros Corke 18-15 to name a couple. A couple of other games were unfortunately slightly more one-sided with Marcia Hartley beating Karen Funnell 17-6 and Sue Cooke beating Lyn Walton 17-4. After another round the semi-finalists were lined up with Sandra Bartlett from Winsley taking on Sue Cooke from Box and Alex Jacobs from Box playing Janice Bull from Amesbury. Both games proved to be close affairs with Sandra winning 14-11 and Alex winning a tough affair 15-9 against Janice.
The quarter finalists have now been determined and the draw can be found under the Ladies National pages here
