Although Wiltshire trailed by a small margin for most of the game, the six rinks won their final two ends by an aggregate score of 22-1. This outstanding finish, against the national title holders, secured a 16-6 win, by 115 shots to 110.
Rinks skipped by Neil Smith and Russell Francis were ahead throughout the game, and Graham Shadwell held a lead from the tenth end onwards. Although the other three rinks were beaten, Mel Biggs lost by two shots to extremely strong opponents, and Ben Gadd and Justin Davis deserve great credit for recovering well from slow starts to lose by small margins.
Manager Neil Smith gave the following comments following his first competitive game in charge:
“I’m very proud of the whole squad, the 2 rinks that were behind early on played a massive part in the win bringing their matches back to single figures, also thanks to all the supporters who played their part in a great day for Wiltshire”.
Although the win puts us 10 points ahead of Devon, we are likely to need further strong wins from our remaining two games to win the group and qualify for the Quarter Finals. Our next fixture at home to Worcestershire, on Saturday 17 June, is equally important, so a repeat of yesterday’s excellent support would be appreciated.
