On 26 June the BWL Walker Cup team hosted Gloucestershire at Devizes BC for their second round match against Gloucestershire. Despite the weather the green played quite well and the competition was fierce!
Wiltshire had a fairly even start across the two rinks and at 5 ends Alex Jacob’s rink was 5-4 up and Kathryn Yeoman’s rink was 8-5 down so 12-10 to Gloucestershire overall at this point. The score was very similar at 10 ends but with Wiltshire taking a two shot advantage with Wiltshire leading 22-20. This formed continued and at 15 ends Wiltshire continued to lead 36-29 (largely thanks to a 5 for Alex’s rink and a 2 for Kathryn’s rink on the 15th end).
In the closing ends the game got very tense with every shot potentially meaning a win or loss. Wiltshire dug deep and Kathryn’s rink took a brilliant 5 on the 18th end to take a 23-19 lead, however a string of three losing ends on the bounce saw Alex’s 20-12 lead at 15 ends reduced to a mere 20-19 lead at 18 ends.
However, in true Wiltshire fashion the ladies held their heads high and played to their best with Alex’s rink taking a crucial 2 on the 19th end and a 3 on the 21st saw them win 25-21. This was well needed as Kathryn’s rink dropped a 2 and a 3 on the penultimate and final end to mean a 24-24 draw on their rink.
Wiltshire therefore saw the game out 49-45 and book a place in the next round versus Herefordshire on 16 July. The team has already been announced for this match and can be found under the Walker Cup section of the website.
