Bowls Wiltshire Youth Academy announcement

Bowls Wiltshire is delighted to announce details of their new County Youth Academy.

The BW Youth Academy has been formed to provide young bowlers, aged 18 years or under, with the opportunity to train and play with other youth athletes across Wiltshire.

Our aim is to encourage, support and develop our young players to be the best bowlers they can be, enjoy their sport and prepare them to be able to represent their county in the future.

The Academy will be coach led and through organised sessions and games seeks to:

  • foster and develop team spirit
  • develop and enhance practical bowling skills
  • broaden and develop players’ knowledge of the game
  • highlight why young people are so important to the future of Bowls Wiltshire
  • identify and prepare players for our County Amy Rose and White Rose teams, and potentially the Bowls England Youth Academy and International teams of the future.

Announcing the launch, Coach and Bowls Development Officer, Nigel Morgan said:

“Our start has been somewhat delayed and overshadowed by the backdrop of the past year, but we are still all very excited about the new Academy and keen to get back on the green and see our young bowlers enjoying their game.  Our team of coaches and officials are looking forward to welcoming everyone.”

Unfortunately due to the ongoing pandemic, the county has had to delay its plans for a large formal launch event until a later date.  This event will be supported by Ellen Falkner MBE (World/Commonwealth Gold Medallist and Coach Bowls Coach.

In the meantime, the Academy team are moving ahead with their plans to hold regular meets across the county, to bring young bowlers together for practice exercises and games.

The first session is being held at Trowbridge Westbourne B.C. on Saturday 14th August at 1.30pm

We still need to be careful and maintain social distancing for everyone’s comfort and safety.  Plans are being put in place to ensure that all events are conducted with the safety and welfare of all attendees as the uppermost priority.  It may prove necessary to limit numbers, so to aid planning and avoid disappointment we are asking that anyone interested in attending, register as soon as possible.

Going forward it is planned to hold regular county wide outdoor and indoor training throughout the calendar year.  Where possible, additional coordinated sessions will be held within local areas subject to numbers of junior members.

A new County Youth Administrator (Sue Fletcher) has been appointed to liaise with clubs, act as a point of contact for Youth Academy members across the county and coordinate the administration of training sessions and events.
