On a glorious day for bowling, our Bowls Wiltshire Ladies Johns Trophy team travelled to Kingswood & Hanham to take on a tough Somerset side in the opening match of their 2023 campaign. Following an excellent run last year, Wiltshire would have been looking to get off to a strong start, to build the foundations for another trip to Leamington.
Across the six rinks, this was a close game throughout, with Wiltshire seemingly just having the edge, but at 18 ends, there was absolutely nothing to split the two sides. A strong finish across the green saw Wiltshire surge ahead in the closing stages, securing a 12 shot victory, plus the spoils on 4 out of 6 rinks, meaning an 18-4 win to begin the Johns season.
Charlie Godwin’s quartet faced the tough task of taking on a rink headed up by decorated international player Stef Branfield. Despite trailing by 9 shots at both the 15 and 18 end mark, Charlie & co rallied, reducing the final deficit to just 5 shots, losing 24-19. Kathryn Yeoman’s rink took on youngster Imogen Cracknell. After a tight start, they managed to build some momentum and establish a 7 shot lead. Despite the Somerset four’s best efforts, Wiltshire stood firm, and took the 2 points on offer on this rink, eventually winning 20-16.
Marcia Easton faced Elaine Amery and it was clear from the outset that this was not going to be an easy task. Just trailing 11-8 at 10 ends, Marcia’s quartet lost the next 5 ends 6-1, to trail 17-9 at 15. To their credit, they managed to stem the flow of shots which proved crucial to the overall result, eventually losing 22-13. Sue Cooke was involved in a tight battle against Heather Willerton, narrowly trailing for most of the game. However, when it counted most, Sue’s rink managed to turn the tide, winning the last 3 ends 6 shots to 1, to record a 19-16 victory.
Alex Jacobs & co got off to a strong start against another of Somerset’s young talents, Olivia Starr. Alex led 7-2 early on, extending this lead to 15-5 at 15 ends. The 10 shot margin would remain the same at the close of play, both teams scoring 3 shots each in the last 6 ends in a tight finish, meaning an 18-8 victory and the points for this rink to Wiltshire. Alison Fail’s rink were locked in a see-saw battle against Becky McMillan. At 15 ends, Alison led 15-10, but by 18 ends this gap was closed to just 2 shots. Alison’s four responded excellently over the last 3 ends, winning them 8-1 to record a 23-14 win.
A very positive start for Bowls Wiltshire Ladies, who will be looking to build on this in their next match on the 17th June, this time at the chosen home green of Devizes, where they will play hosts to Dorset.
BW Ladies travelled to Kingswood & Hanham to take on Somerset in the first match in this years Johns Trophy.
