Middleton Cup 2018 first trial

The following players are invited to the Middleton Cup First Trial to be held at Royal Wootton Bassett on Saturday 12 May at 10.00am. Please arrive by 9.30am. Dress code Greys & Bowls Top.

The trial was originally scheduled for Sunday 13 May, but due to the White Rose Under 25 match on the Sunday, the trial has been re-scheduled for the Saturday.

Message from Middleton Cup manager, Neil Smith:

This is probably the largest number of players we have asked to attend a Middleton Cup trial, the selection committee feel it’s important to reward players for good performances, so we are prepared to give you a chance.

It’s very important for everyone to start the season positively, we don’t have long before the Devon game and even less time before the Prelim Balcomb match, also against Devon on Sunday 27 May at Topsham 12pm, we all need to hit the ground running, so we are in good shape when we face Devon.

We have mixed the rinks up a little so we can explore lots of possibilities, we want to see you all on top form so it makes our job really difficult. The trial will be a full game, we may make the odd positional change if we feel we need too.

There will be rolls available after the game.

The team to play Hampshire on Saturday 19th 2pm @ RWB will be on the website on Sunday 13th.

Middleton Cup horror as BW Men fall at final hurdle

Report from Adam Tanner:

Unfortunately our Middleton Cup campaign ended yesterday afternoon with a 16-6 defeat away to Gloucestershire at Cheltenham BC.

The majority of the Gloucestershire team, including all of the skips, are Cheltenham players, and they made home advantage count on a difficult green, particularly during the early stages. Although Wiltshire won on 3 rinks, we never quite managed to take an aggregate lead across the rinks, and eventually lost by 120 shots to 105.

Elsewhere, Devon’s comfortable 22-0 win over Worcestershire allowed them to overtake us and take top spot in the group. They will play Somerset in the national Quarter Finals.

This represented a frustrating end to the campaign. However, our recent win over a nationally dominant Devon side proves that we have the ability to compete at the highest level. Next season’s group will require us to play the same fixtures in reverse, so we will soon have an opportunity to put things right.

Balcomb Trophy result

The Wiltshire Top 8 visited Bristol BC for the regional finals of the Balcomb Trophy. Their first match was against a strong Dorset side with the winner due to face either Devon or Somerset to book their place at Leamington. Match report from Wiltshire Team Manager, Neil Smith:

A really tight first match against Dorset, Mel Biggs rink took on a rink skipped by Paul Pomeroy, Mel lead 11-6 at 8 ends but then lost 7 ends on the trot to fall 21-11 down after 15, at the same stage Grahamwas 15 -13 up on Jamie Lockwood, a strong finish was needed by both rinks and that’t exactly what we got, Graham won 4 of the last 6 ends to win 20-16, Mel also won 4 of the 6 ends to close the gap to 22-24 and ensure a 2 shot win for Wiltshire.

The 2nd game was against Devon, Mel played Sam and Graham played Jamie, we had a fantastic start and looked in control most of the way through, at 10 ends Mel was 14-7 up and Graham 9-6 up, the lads were playing well on a tricky surface, the wind was making it very difficult, at 14 ends Devon had reduced it to 3 shots, with Mel leading 16-12 and Graham now 11-12.

We held on and went 7 up with 7 to play, but the next end proved to be the turning point, a poor end from Mel’s rink, only 1 bowl in the head, Paxton took it out and Sam added 2 more to get a 7, Jamie took took 2 bowls out to make a 3 against Graham so all of a sudden we were 3 down with 5 to play, we tried to rally but to no avail, 4 down with 2 to play proved too much and Devon ran out the winners.  Mel finished 20-25 and Graham was 17-17 playing the last but tried to kill the end so not sure what happened.

A great effort from our lads against a very good Devon team, we were so close and in hindsight could have played that 1 end better, hopefully we will now get it right in 2 weeks time against Gloucestershire in 2 weeks time.

Wiltshire managed a convincing 140-106 win over Worcestershire in the second of our three Middleton Cup group games.

Three of our rinks managed comfortable wins. Ben Gadd stormed to a 17-0 lead after 8 ends, and went on to win 33-15. Russell Francis was level at 9-9 after 12 ends, but his rink produced a superb second half performance to win 32-13. And, although Graham Shadwell led by just one shot after 18 ends, 10 shots in the final 3 ends gave his rink a 27-16 win.

We were unfortunate not to gain more than 16 of the 22 available points. Mel Biggs was beaten 19-17 by the final bowl of the game, Justin Davis conceded 3 on the final end to also lose 19-17, and Neil Smith was beaten 24-14, largely due to some excellent play by senior England international Andy Walters.

2 wins from 2 ensure that we remain 6 points clear of our main contenders Devon. Scoring 17 or more points in our final fixture, away to Gloucestershire at Cheltenham BC on 8 July, would therefore guarantee qualification. Any support which can be offered would be gratefully received.
