Our ladies South West Counties team travelled to Tiverton West End Bowls Club on Tuesday to take on Cornwall in the opening fixture of this year’s South West Counties League.
This was a very evenly matched affair, with rink honours being split, each county winning 3 of the 6. Joan Coleman’s quartet went down by 10 shots, the rink skipped by Alison Fail suffered a narrow 7 shot defeat and despite only being 9 shots adrift at 15 ends, Laura Laytham & co were unfortunate to end up losing 33-11.
However, the 3 winning rinks produced some excellent displays, with S Griffiths, skipping a four combined of Supermarine and Wroughton, recording a 6 shot victory. Another Amesbury skip, Janice Rowe, recorded a 7 shot victory, managing to pull away from the opposition who had reduced the gap to just 2 shots with 3 ends to go.
The highlight though, and perhaps the difference maker overall, was the quartet skipped by Babs Salter, who recorded an astounding 41-5 win, adding a huge shot difference to ensure Wiltshire recorded a 10 shot victory overall.
A strong start for our ladies, well done to all involved!
