After being crowned the 2021 National Pairs Champions, Katy & Lucy Smith were back in action at the weekend at the British Isles playoffs held at Oxford City & County. Unlike previous years, due to cancellations of previous championships and each country only being entitled to one representative, the girls had to defeat the 2019 National Champions from Lincolnshire, Sheila Plaskitt (Replaced by Helen Holroyd for this game) and Penny Strong in order to win the right to represent England at this years British Isles Championships, held at Llandrindod Wells at the end of June.
It was a fantastic display by the Wiltshire duo, who produced some excellent bowling to ensure they were the pairing to become England’s representatives. The foundations were set early on, building a 7-3 lead at 5 ends, and gradually pulling away from their opposition to lead 11-5 at 10 ends, 16-8 at 15 ends, before securing victory with 2 ends still to play, the Lincolnshire pair conceding at 20-10.
We wish the girls all the very best when the time comes for them to embark on their quest to bring the British Isles title home to England, and to Wiltshire!
